Trooper's Pedigree

Last week we received Trooper's Certificate of Registration in the mail. Trooper is our pure bred Border Collie. We bought him from Burr Hill Border Collies last September when he was just 8 weeks old. He has been registered in the Stud Book of the American Border Collie Association.

The certificate itself resembles a human pedigree chart. Trooper's original name is listed. He was named Moss by the breeder. His dam is Cindy and his sire is Jake. Trooper (Moss) was named for one of his grandsires, Moss who lives in Scotland. Trooper's pedigree chart provides us with information for four generations! That means we know the names of his parents, all 4 of his grandparents, all 8 of his great-grandparents and all 16 of his great, great-grandparents! Furthermore, the names of all the owners are listed as well as the locations. Trooper has ancestors in Scotland, Ontario, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and Arizona.

I thought it interesting how people will spend time recording the pedigree of their pure bred animals - horses, dogs, cats -yet they themselves don't know their own ancestry.

How many of you know all the names and places of your grandparents, let alone your great, great-grandparents? I know I don't. Looks like its time to do some more research!
